The game of tennis is unpredictable. A player has to react direct to the actions and intentions of their opponent. "Tennis is a game of emergencies" and when you see some of the players that play in my zoo the emergencies start the moment they walk on the court...
When playing tennis no two situations are the exactly the same. Your ablity to read the game depends on 4 anticipation factors: - Tracking anticipation
- Tactical anticipation situational anticipation
- Geometrical anticipation
- Technical anticipation
Tracking The reading of the ball trajectory. In order to anticipate the ball flight (before and after) the bounce you have to be able to read speed, height, direction and spin of the ball which determine where the ball will land. Beginner’s lack of experience in this is the main cause of being too close/too far away from the ball. By observing the height over the net and speed and spin you can begin to read where the ball will bounce and how it will bounce. Tactical Reading your opponent’s intentions are developed from your experience of reading their pattern of play. ALL players tend to be predictable- players will habitually react the same from certain tactical situations eg. when attacking player A's backhand-they continually lob, so counter with a well prepared smash. Geometrical The ability to read your opponents intentions as a result of their court position. This involves knowledge of tactics in the game, also requires understanding of space/angles available to your opponent. Technical Reading of your opponents body movement, positioning and balance often enables you to know what type of stroke they are about to use. eg. you have played a deep volley and your opponent has an open stance with the weight back. Technical anticipation warns of a lob and you prepare for the appropriate return: a smash!! So get out there and practice. There are no short cuts in this game, it is just hard work! But whilst we are practicing we have to understand a little of the following. Rhythm and rally speed. |
