Players at all levels struggle with the service toss from time to time, often because they use unnecessary movements that complicate things too much. But many of my players have improved this aspect of their game by using a few techniques that keep their toss simply and streamlined. First, begin with your arm directly below your target toss location. This helps create a straight line for the flight of the ball. Second, don’t really toss the ball. Instead, as you lift your arm up allow it to release from your hand. This eliminates any complicating movements resulting from trying to purposely toss the ball into the air. And finally, continue this releasing motion until your arm extends straight above your head and points at the ball in its service target area. With some practice this simplified service release will help you place the ball exactly where you want it to go when you serve.
