Just When Do You Split? PDF

I have just been watching Rafa Nadal win his opening match in Miami, and continue to be amazed at his court movement.
His speed and reactions are just so good, and it is interesting just to watch HIM in a match and not focus on the other guy.
So this morning I received an e-mail from a one Jim McClennan who is a top coach and lead writer for the famous tennisone web site, and now has his own site called Essential Tennis Instruction.

Basically what Jim's letter commented on was -when exactly do these guys on their Planet Tennis start their first move, or that all important split step - and here in this photo is a bit of a guide.

Just take a look at Roger Federer as Rafa makes contact with the ball - he is as Jim calls it "at the top of the hop" - How early is that - but obviously that is what you have to do if you want to play as good as these guys, so next time out rather than waiting for the ball to arrive at your feet before you react, try splitting earlier - you knwo it makes sense.
