Some facts you may like to know about tennis at the Olympics over the years.

The number of players expected to compete in the 5 medal events, as mixed doubles will be an official event for the first time since 1924.

Is the number of years the sport was not included- from 1924 in Paris to 1988 in Seoul, owing to a dispute between the ITF and the IOC over amateurism.

The top 56 players on the ATP and WTA ranking will qualify for the singles event.

However each country is limited to 4 players, so a player who is in the top 56 but ranked 5 in their country is not eligible.

26,000

The number of spectators who can watch the tennis each day, as opposed to the 40,000 a day for Wimbledon, du to the fact that only 12 courts will be used.

Tennis was one of the original 9 sports in the modern Olympics held in Athens in 1896.

All matches will be the best of 3 sets, except the mens final, which will be the best of five.If a third set is needed in the mixed doubles, it will be decided on a super tie break, the first team to 10 points with at least a 2 point lead.
